Yesterday was a bad day in that Max the Cat went on to the void at the end of Wotan’s rainbow bridge. On Facebook, I gathered last night from my old college roommate back at Medio-Central Hungary U. (Debrecen) that his nephew, apparently aged about 18, had had a biking accident while riding without a helmet and was in the ICU. Seems today that the kid isn’t responding and the prognosis for recovery is “slim”. My own middle son is 18 and had his high school graduation today. It would be pretty grim to have him suffer an irrecuperable injury (di melius!).
You know, I bike whenever I can (since the warm months here in Iglooville are so few), and when I see somebody biking without a helmut, I think to myself, “I know what value I put on my brain, and I guess I can see what value you put on yours.” That’s just an idle joke to myself, of course, and I guess when you’re young, you can’t conceive of getting into a horrific accident.
But nobody ever does plan on getting into a horrific accident, do they? So, if anybody is reading this and goes biking without a helmet: don’t.
