Hey, They Got Feet!: Afghan Edition

Afghan women in white burqas visit the Hazrat-i Ali shrine in Mazar-i-Sharif, decease the centre of Afghan New Year’s or Nauruz celebrations, on March 20, 2010. The pre-Islamic festival is celebrated annually as people from across the war-torn country gather in ancient Balkh province’s capital in northern Afghanistan which holds a shrine attributed to the religion’s fourth Calif, Hazrat-i Ali.

There’s something surreal about this image, with the feet sticking out the bottom and the starkness of the burkas that seem to efface the humanity of the woman under the white heightened by the contrast with the vivd color on the wall in the background, as well as by the face of the old woman in the center. Guess no one’s likely to get turned on by her, so no harm in seeing her face, eh?

You realize, of course, that they are all naked under the burkas?

  2. Keyser says:

Aren’t all women naked underneath their clothing? 😉

  3. PKO Strany says:

    True. As are we.
