Keyser’s often a bit “off” when it comes to trends in pop culture, but what’s the deal with the 24/7 coverage of the long-term impact of the death of some deranged erstwhile black kid who made some popular music 25 years ago, dancing weirdly into the bargain? Okay, so when he died, a few “Freak Finally Fades” headlines would have been fine, but even at the time what difference did it make, and the “news” just seems to go on and on.

You know, to use the old Roman legal adage cui bono, one would have to say that the main beneficiaries are the theocrats over in Iran, since no one seems to have paid the least attention to the anti-government rioting since The Freak died. Are they even rioting at all? Maybe the rioters call the whole thing off since they too are in morning.

Hey, maybe they should all start moon-walking as a form of protest, combining the best of both worlds: mourning the loss of one of the world’s great freaks and at the same time regaining the interest of the grief-stricken West…

Isn’t this just another example of the fake emotions that everyone is supposed to feel these days? Going bonkers over Princess Diana or Mother Teresa or whoever it happens to be? I don’t watch television news and simply threw aside the first section of my local paper on seeing the first ten pages devoted to Michael Jackson.

The only sensible comment I’ve seen on this was: further proof of America’s greatness. The only country in the world where a poor black boy can grow up to be a rich white woman.

Not very nice, perhaps, but still…

Oh, but is it really fake? If you look at all those sniveling hordes crying their eyes out at the death of some selfish, immature “princess,” can you really doubt their sincerity? Surely, it’s part of some tiresome need to be “part of things.” Perhaps this fascination with “celebrities” (however defined) is the modern substitute for religious ceremony and patriotism?

LOL! Proof no doubt of something about modern America, but …greatness?
